Ramallah, Washington – SaebPress … A United States proposal to push the Palestinians leadership to withdraw their statehood bid at the United Nations and return to the negotiations table was the “last straw,” and convinced Acting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that appealing to the Security Council was the best option, Fatah official Nabil Shaath informed news reporters in Ramallah.
Saturday, Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath indicated that the Palestinian decision to appeal the Security Council was motivated by their rejection of a last-ditch U.S. attempt to sway the Palestinian Authority away from its planned statehood bid and toward resumed negotiations with Israel.
According to Shaath, the American proposal, which was delivered at the last minute by US envoys David Hale and Dennis Ross, did not mention a moratorium on settlement construction or the status of existing settlements.
“All that was written is that demographic changes that had been taking place since 1967 need to be taken into account when demarcating permanent borders”, furthermore Shaath added that ‘’the proposal included many of Israel’s demands, including security arrangements, settlements and a solution to the refugee problem – without consulting the Palestinian side on these issues adding to that nothing was said or done to make us reconsider our appeal to the international community,” he said. “But we know that Netanyahu doesn’t like the idea of land swap. He wants to annex the settlement blocs for free,” he added.
Nabil Shaath confirmed that a plan delivered at the last minute by U.S. envoys David Hale and Dennis Ross did not meet several Palestinian demands, thus convincing Palestinian Acting President Mahmoud Abbas that the U.S. was not serious in trying to negotiate peace.
However American officials in Washington have confirmed to SaebPress, that the U.S. working hard to avoid the embarrassment of being forced to use its veto power in order to prevent the Palestinian vote, by trying to assemble enough security council members to either vote against the proposal or abstain as to make the veto unnecessary.
The US is on the diplomatic offensive on eight countries: Bosnia, Portugal, France, Britain, Germany, Columbia, Gabon and Nigeria is trying to persuade six other nations to oppose bid; the two African nations and Bosnia are the hardest to sway. Security Council members Lebanon, Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa and India will support the Palestinians .
