“We’re facing an Intifada,” Qadura Fares, president of the Palestinian Prisoners Society, told reporters. “The hunger-striking prisoners and the tense demonstrations, the violent clashes during which Palestinian civilians are killed, and the frozen peace process — all indicate that we’re sitting on a barrel of dynamite. Palestinians became eligible to join the ICC after the UN general assembly upgraded Palestine status; the world body in November upgraded Palestine from an observable entity for non-member state, which is legally considered a de facto recognition of independent Palestine state.
